Television Feasts

I am a home cook who backyard gardens and has a serious closet addiction to the Food Network. I envision visiting the world in my own kitchen.

From Julia to Giada, I am a bi-product of the quirky world of anything food television. At age 10 I wanted to lunch with Julia; at 12 I thought sitting at Graham Kerr's table would be bliss; in college I was a diligent voyeur student of Jeff Smith's; and as a newlywed I envisioned myself being Martha. Then the sky opened up and violin music played in the background when I discovered an entire family of food shows on the blossoming food network. Twenty years later I am still a home chef with a backyard garden, yet in my head I am a trained chef who has eaten her way around the world, tasted all things exotic, competed in many challenges, judged the best of the best, and have a circle of friends which includes Emeril, Bobby, Rachael and more. I like to learn and challenge myself simply for the pleasure of all things food. I am a student of the University of Food Network and my textbooks, exams and extra-curricular activities all stem from channel 39.

Berry Fresh and Tiki Fun!

Today was the ultimate vacation day!  I mentioned the past few days that I was visiting family for my sister's big day (I won't mention how many decades because that will be me eventually).  I am usually designated as the chief cook and bottle washer, but today I had the entire day out!  So, rather than tell you what I made, I am cheating ever so slightly, and putting a slant on something new, meaning something I never ate before.  Yup, my blog, my rules, my challenge!  And besides, you know I have double posted in the past days!

We started out the day at a delightful cafe in Jupiter, FL called the Berry Fresh Cafe.  Absolutely what you want in a breakfast and lunch place!  Everything is made from scratch and designed to hilight and feature local ingredients.  None of that vacuum sealed frozen entrees that the chain restaurants use!  Not only is the decor inviting and new, the staff is exceptional.  When the manager knew it was our first visit, she immediately welcomed us and offered an incentive for a return visit.  Loved that attention to good customer service!

Best thing about the place.....the squeeze bottle of homemade Berry Jam.  Ok, yup, I so wanted to be a kid and squirt it like chocolate syrup right into my mouth!  It was rich and packed with berry taste.  You could pick out the raspberry, blackberry, blueberry and more!  I know that will be the recipe I repeatedly try to copy until I get it right.  On their 7 grain toast, YUM!

The omelet was packed with fresh veges and the potatoes....oh, those potatoes, so good.  I am guessing they were small red skin potatoes boiled or roasted and then set down in the fryer for a quick crisp.  They were crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

Opened only their first year and I have a feeling when I return for my next visit to FL, I will have to stand in a long line to get into this place, once word spreads this will be THE place to go for breakfast and lunch!  Pardon the obvious, this was berry, berry GOOD!  http://www.berryfreshcafe.biz

Our next stop was shopping and a little pampering at the nail salon.  Very out of the ordinary for those that know me.  It was fun to do something I don't usually splurge doing (thank you to my brother-in-law for the treat!).

Then we met the guys for drinks and dinner at the Tiki Waterfront Sea Grill, perfect choice for this PA girl who had a hellish winter!  We sat waterside and watched the boats; people watching was fun; Alex our waiter, um, hmmm lacked a sense of humor but I'll give him props for being busy.  Drinks were generous and the food good.  I tried Grouper, which will be what I take away from this meal to try and cook myself)  It was crusted with sweet potato (slightly burned though), then done on a flat grill..  It was a little fishy, which I don't mind, but if you prefer more delicate fish this should not be your choice.  The rice was nothing to shout home about, but the fresh green beans were perfect. Oh, I forgot, calamari appetizer done well with a great remoulade sauce (gotta try making it as well), the crab, spinach dip I would rank as OK.
Very nice way to end my Florida Fun in the Sun week, only to fly back to rain and cold :(
